Article Submission
[edit]Hello team,
I have recently submitted a page for review but I don't have an update yet if it was accepted and published. Can you help check please?
Thanks, Angelica AngelicaMonsalud01 (talk) 21:02, 13 February 2025 (UTC)
- @AngelicaMonsalud01: I suspect you are on the wrong website, since we don't have articles. Perhaps you are looking for the English-language Wikipedia? - Jmabel ! talk 21:26, 13 February 2025 (UTC)
- @AngelicaMonsalud01: Right, en:User:AngelicaMonsalud01/sandbox is still a draft, needing more attention to the formatting of the references. See en:WP:REFB. How do you know the subject? — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:42, 13 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Jeff, I know Ron through our work but I aim to ensure my contributions to the article remain neutral and based on verifiable sources. AngelicaMonsalud01 (talk) 00:15, 19 February 2025 (UTC)

Kein Erbe des Urheberrechts (No heir of the copyright)
--Rosenzweig τ 17:30, 16 February 2025 (UTC)

[edit]Hello. I am wondering how to upload another file to an existing file, like to make the images resolution 4k or hd. So how can I do that? Nedia020415 (talk) 02:57, 17 February 2025 (UTC)

Modifications to the "List of Isotopes" pages
[edit]I was told to use the "Curl" function with your "List of isotopes" pages to update a personnal database about Isotopes and decays. This is great : I can now regenerate my database in less then 15 minutes compared to around 10 days to do the same thing manually.
However, I found some cases that need some attention ( I already applied corrections in my previous personal database
27 cases for which I have a correction 58 cases for which I have a small modification to your "List of isotopes" pages 19 cases for which an invalid numeric data was specified
Can I submit these cases to somebody at Wikipedia ?
Thank you very much. Michel Béliveau (talk) 21:04, 17 February 2025 (UTC)
- Michel Béliveau, the help page and teahouse at en Wikipedia are currently protected due to vandalism, which means you need to have ten edits on en Wikipedia and an account at least 4 days old to post there. Currently you only have five, but your account is old enough. Can you ask me this question on your talk page 1 edit, add some examples of what you want to do in 4 edits, then you should be able to post on the tea house or help desk. You need to provide sources for any corrections you are requesting. Normally we don't encourage "gaming" permissions (en:WP:PGAME), but I think it is reasonable in this case. Headquarter images
[edit]I got this photo of the headquarters of Retro Studios from Nintendo of America's official career website, and I am unsure if I am able to upload it on Wikimedia or the English Wikipedia freely. If so, what license should I use? AltendoYT (talk) 00:40, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
- @AltendoYT: you linked a bare image here. Did you find this on some page that led you to think a license has been offered? If so, please link that page.
- Also, you might want to read Commons:How to#How do I upload content to Commons if I am not the creator (or it is only partly my work)? - Jmabel ! talk 01:00, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I also linked the website (in the above text that says official career website, but here is the link again in case), and you can find the image by clicking on the black dot on Texas in the US map.
- When I said license, I meant images from the official website or parent company website. I don't know if it's free to share, that's why I'm asking. AltendoYT (talk) 01:06, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
- Nothing there indicates any license. Please read the link I suggested you might want to read, which I think should explain sufficiently, but if it doesn't, then feel free to come back with any specific questions. - Jmabel ! talk 01:09, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Here is what the Terms of Use says:

- A. Nintendo. Nintendo grants you a limited, non-sublicensable license to access and use the Services for your personal use only. Such license is subject to these Terms and does not include: (a) any resale or commercial use of the Services or the Materials therein; (b) the distribution, public performance or public display of any Materials; (c) modifying or otherwise making any derivative uses of the Services or the Materials, or any portion thereof; (d) downloading (other than the page caching) of any portion of the Services, the Materials or any information contained therein, except as expressly permitted on the Services; or (f) any use of the Services or the Materials other than for their intended purposes. Any use of the Services or the Materials other than as specifically authorized herein, without the prior written permission of Nintendo, is strictly prohibited and will terminate the license granted herein. Such unauthorized use may also violate applicable laws, including without limitation copyright and trademark laws and applicable communications regulations and statutes. Unless explicitly stated herein, nothing in these Terms shall be construed as conferring any license to intellectual property rights, whether by estoppel, implication or otherwise. Nintendo may revoke this license at any time.
- Seeing how it says that public display of and downloading "Materials" (which I guess includes the linked image and other ones on the site) are prohibited, I don't think it is legal to upload this without Nintendo of America's approval (if you can confirm it isn't, I will ask them if it's okay to upload it), but I want to make sure just in case it is. AltendoYT (talk) 01:27, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
- All of which amounts to "no free license." As stated in the page I linked, that is the case for the vast bulk of what is on the Internet.
- You can't just "ask them if it is OK to upload it." Even if they said "yes", that still wouldn't constitute a license. Again, please read Commons:How to#How do I upload content to Commons if I am not the creator (or it is only partly my work)?, and especially the section following that, "How do I get a free license from a third-party copyright-holder?" which will explain what you would have to do here (and why it is very unlikely Nintendo would want to do this). - Jmabel ! talk 04:20, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
- I had to think about this after uploading my photo of a snow dinosaur made by a little girl and her father, who were present. It was deleted for copyviol, since I had only asked whether it was okay to share with others and they said yes. I hadn't thought that this would fail to qualify as a license. So, next time if a similar opportunity arises, I'll flip the camera over to video and have the author(s) chant something like, "We made this dinosaur and want everybody to photograph it and see it and they don't have to tell us or pay us or say we did it." That, I figure, constitutes a CC0 which I could send privately to anyone with a concern about it. I'd rather do a CC-BY but that would mean giving a long explanation of what that means and y'know, those billions of normal people out there have no idea that a snow dinosaur makes them an author with a copyright. Jim.henderson (talk) 07:24, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
- To obtain a valid licence, this is exactly what is needed: "giving a long explanation of what it means and tell them that a snow dinosaur has ToO and is a work with a copyright. They then can chant "CC0" or (at least in the USA) release the dinosaur into the public domain, but they don't have to sing it. Prose works too. “This SVG file contains an illegal namespace“
[edit]Hi!
I’m new to Wikimedia Commons, and I while I was trying to upload my first contribution, I encountered a weird error stating:
This SVG file contains an illegal namespace "http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml".
I downloaded the file from the Tennessine Flag Designer. Could that be the problem or is it because it’s a XHTML image?
Thanks in advance! Derna in East Libya (talk) 09:57, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
- Indeed a SVG image needs to have a "SVG" document type, not a "xhtml" document type, because SVG images are documents of the type SVG. Documents of the type XHTML are html pages. HTML. XHTML, SVG, XML are different types of SGML documents. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 18:10, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
- We're going to need a Bulgarian-speaker to answer this, because as a foreigner trying to decipher it, "нямам лицевзирани права" is completely ambiguous: does it mean "the rights are my own, not obtained by license from someone else" or "the rights belong to someone else and I don't have a license"? - Jmabel ! talk 19:22, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Elkost: can you help out here? - Jmabel ! talk 19:29, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
- The Bulgarian word "лицевзирани" is misspelled, must be "лицензирани", meaning "licensed" (in plural). Then the phrase "нямам лицевзирани права" should be read as "нямам лицензирани права", meaning "I don't have licensed rights". This editor has practically no wiki-experience, as he has globally only 3 edits: 2 in the Bg.wiki and the last is here. I will answer further to him in Bulgarian.
--Elkost (talk) 02:42, 19 February 2025 (UTC)

Uploading from Govinfo.gov or other Public Domain website
[edit]How do upload a digital asset directly from an URL, and skip the intermediate step of downloading to my computer?
The Special:UploadWizard can "get from Flickr", subject to its terms of use, but this wizard could also be exapnded to upload from government websites whose content is in the public domain.
For example the document here: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/01/28/2025-01905/hiring-freeze
Has a PDF version here: https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2025-01-28/pdf/2025-01905.pdf
That I wish to directly upload to commons. Also, does commons have a gadget or a service that will convert PDF documents to DJVU? This is for eventual transclusion on Wikisource.
Are there help pages that cover this topic and use case? Thanks, Jaredscribe (talk) 04:41, 19 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Jaredscribe: Uploading to Commons directly from other websites is not something currently supported.
- For converting PDFs to DJVUs, see Help:Converting PDF to DjVu but, no, there is nothing within Commons to do that either. - Jmabel ! talk 05:56, 19 February 2025 (UTC)
WIKIPEDIA COMMONS UPLOAD

- @National Young Author's Fair: it's a little hard to know just what you were doing, because while there is such a thing as the Wikipedia upload wizard, there is no such thing as Wikipedia Commons. Which of the following are you trying to do?
- Upload a file to Wikimedia Commons using Commons:UploadWizard
- Upload a file directly to the Wikipedia in some language (which language?) using that Wikipedia's upload Wizard
- Upload a file to Wikimedia Commons using the upload Wizard that is part of Wikipedia in some language (which language?)
- If it is number 3, please try number 1 instead.
- If it is number 2, please ask on that Wikipedia, not here on Commons.
- If it is number 1, are you trying to upload one file at a time or multiple files? What sort of system are you on? How fast is your Internet connection?
- You appear to have successfully uploaded five files to Commons, one of them before asking this and four after. So perhaps your problem is already solved. Jmabel ! talk 06:05, 19 February 2025 (UTC)

Handling photographs printed by another photographer
[edit]I am researching the works of Christiaan Benjamin Nieuwenhuis and have found strong indications that some photographs attributed to him were not originally taken by him; his studio merely reproduced these prints at request by others as is/was often the case in the case of (amateur) photographers who do/did not have the means to print them themselves. (Some of) these prints were signed with his studio's (relief) stamp, leading now to the erroneous believe that he was the original photographer.
How does/can WikiMedia distinguish this kind of attribution? Is 'Publisher' correct in this case? 'Publisher' does not seem to apply to photographs; e.g., there is no category 'Photograph publishers' in 'Publishers by medium'. Freekc34 (talk) 10:38, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Freekc34: Hi, and welcome. Try Category:Print shops. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:58, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Jeff G. Thanks for the suggestion. Triggered by it I searched a little further and found Category:Photographic studios which seems to me a better fit ('Print shops' more press-related). Freekc34 (talk) 20:43, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
- FWIW, File:Native Americans and canoes in Belltown, ca. 1898 - DPLA - 52fedff74dbe49bc3a720a7761581559.jpg is an example of what I did with a very complicated case. - Jmabel ! talk 18:35, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Jmabel Nice! This is similar to what I want to achieve in my research: collecting information about a photograph from several sources, investigate the data found and then suggest/explain a more valid 'truth' for the photograph. However, I am not sure whether this, adding a discussion inside the description, is allowed in Wikimedia (like in 'no own research' in Wikipedia)....
- Returning to my original question, I see that you simply appended 'reprinted by Asahel Curtis' in the Creator attribute; that is something I could do too. Thanks! Freekc34 (talk) 21:13, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Freekc34: Commons does not have nearly the same degree of animus toward original research as Wikipedia (though you will notice that I cite a lot of sources there, just not by footnoting). Basically, every photo of your own that you upload would be "orginal research" in Wikipedia terms. (Obviously, maps, for graphics that intend to display scientific knowledge, etc., our standards are closer to theirs.) Which is to say, it's not "anything goes", but in particular we are certainly friendlier to synthesis. - Jmabel ! talk 21:25, 21 February 2025 (UTC)

[edit]A performer was on a TV show and we only got a decent photo from the show itself hence the screenshot. AiielleVia (talk) 21:03, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
- No: you can't. That would be a copyright violation to the detriment of the person operating the camera and/or the production enterprise, the director of the TV network. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 21:08, 21 February 2025 (UTC)

Uploading screenshots of Commons
[edit]I am planning to upload files to replace the existing File:Wikimedia Commons vector user toolbar not logged in.png and File:Wikimedia Commons vector user toolbar logged in.png, since the Vector 2022 skin is now the default. I've already taken these screenshots. If I upload them, do I replace these files, or upload separate ones? And what template do I use for these screenshots? {{Wikipedia screenshot}}

- By the way I was thinking about replacing the images of Commons:First steps/Account/Yes/IDK. Justjourney (talk) 01:33, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Justjourney: Maybe I'm confused. "if I modified the file slightly": if you modified what file slightly?
- Yes, it would be good to have Commons:First steps/Account/Yes/IDK use Vector 2022 images. - Jmabel ! talk 01:39, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Jmabel What I meant is where the username link is (points to user page). I changed it from my username (Justjourney) to "username". I used Microsoft Paint to make these changes. Just to make sure: I use
{{wikipedia sceenshot}}
, even though it's a Wikimedia Commons screenshot? Justjourney (talk) 01:47, 23 February 2025 (UTC)- That still completely fails to tell me what file you are talking about modifying. I don't know whether you are talking about some file on your computer, some particular file on Commons, or something else entirely.
- For Commons content, {{Wikimedia-screenshot}} would seem to be the correct license, not one specific to Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 03:50, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Jmabel For the created part of the upload wizard, do I put in today's date? If yes, do I put in the UTC date? Justjourney (talk) 04:15, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
- To answer you last question: if this is something non-photographic you just created, it really doesn't matter that you are precise to the day. Yes, the UTC date would be fine, as would the date in your own time zone.
- You still haven't told me what file you are talking about modifying. If you are just saying that you edited a screen grab, stored as a file on your own machine, with MS Paint, nothing about the change of a username rises to the level of copyrightability, so from an authorship point of view it is irrelevant. If you are saying something else, you will have to be clearer for me to answer. - Jmabel ! talk 04:36, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Jmabel So I've just uploaded the said files: File:Vector2022 skin logged-in.png and File:Vector2022 skin logged-out.png. What I meant about the modification is for File:Vector2022 skin logged-in.png, where I don't want my username "Justjourney" shown in the user page link. I've modified that part, removing my own username, and inserting the word "Username". Justjourney (talk) 04:46, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Jmabel For the created part of the upload wizard, do I put in today's date? If yes, do I put in the UTC date? Justjourney (talk) 04:15, 23 February 2025 (UTC)

Can I upload political parties logos?

- @Catwalk0337: In virtually every country of the world, almost any given logo either below the threshold of originality and is therefore in the public domain or above the threshold and therefore cannot be on Commons unless licensed by the copyright holder. A small number of logos may be so old that their copyrights have expired.

Infobox-picture copyright
[edit]I have a photo of me, taken in 1983 by a student at MSU, Texas. We haven't communicated since then and I don't recall his name. My only use of it has been as the top-page photo on my website, but I'm thinking to submit it to Wikipedia as my Infobox image. If I do so, which copyright-type would be most appropriate? PeterMcKenzieArmstrong (talk) 20:30, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- @PeterMcKenzieArmstrong None. The picture is copyright of the photographer. Since you are alive there is no difficulty with a current photograph being taken and that photographer giving full, formal permission via COM:VRT, or your using another photographer[h where permissions are available formally. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 22:24, 22 February 2025 (UTC)

- and so simply cannot be used. Am I wrong here? 2601:182:1081:3610:28BB:5216:D3EA:4659 17:20, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
- You are correct. If you cannot track down the photographer or their heir, I see no likely way to use that image. The only possibility I see would be if its first publication was in the United States before 28 February 1989, and it was published without copyright notice or registration, in which case under the old copyright law it would have passed directly into the public domain. That would be {{PD-US-1978-89}} - Jmabel ! talk 22:00, 23 February 2025 (UTC)

- @HGPjxau: Hi, For File:Leaf-tailed Lizard, Madagascar (21110205345).jpg, you contacted the wrong person. The person you contacted here merely recopied the file, and also he isn't active here anymore. The person you want to contact is the photographer, indicated in the "author" line, which is Rod Waddington on flickr. I suppose you would need a flickr account to contact him on flickr. He also has a facebook account. But anyway, remember that you do not need to contact the photographer or anybody if, when you use the photo, you follow the instructions of the free license CC BY-SA 2.0 granted by Rod Waddington. Basically, in your publication, you must attribute the photo to Rod Waddington and mention the license CC BY-SA 2.0 and the url of that license. Please read the license for details. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:17, 27 February 2025 (UTC)

- @Justjourney: That depends on what you consider to be a problem. The edits you make while not signed in appear under an IP address and won't be connected to your account. That may not be a problem as long as you don't say that it was you who made the edit -- it's not a good idea to disclose your IP address.

How to change the coordinates in structured data? It doesn't work.

Inquiry About Replacing an Image with a New One
[edit]Dear Wikimedia Support Team,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to inquire about the process for replacing an image that is currently used on a Wikimedia project (specifically on [Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons]). The current image is outdated, and we have a new, more recent and relevant photo that we would like to use in its place.
Could you kindly guide me on the following:
- Is it possible to replace an existing image with a new one on Wikimedia, given that the new image is more up-to-date, better quality, and accurately represents the subject?
- What is the process for replacing an image? Are there any specific steps we need to follow, or is it as simple as uploading the new image and updating the article to reflect this change?
- Do we need to make a formal request for this change, or can the new image simply be uploaded, and the old one replaced directly in the article's edit section?
We understand the importance of adhering to Wikimedia's guidelines and ensuring that the new image complies with all licensing, copyright, and content standards. If there are any additional requirements or considerations, please let us know, and we will be happy to follow them.
Thank you for your time and assistance. We look forward to your guidance on how to proceed. Hayk cs (talk) 11:27, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Hayk cs:
- Those seem questions more for Wikipedia than for Commons, but they are relatively easy, so:
- 1. Yes, as long as you do not go against the consensus of the other contributors to the page.
- 2. As you say: "as simple as uploading and updating". Uploading as a new file, not overwriting the other file.
- 3. It depends. See point 1 above. If there is a possibility that the change might be controversial, it's better first to consult with other contributors, for example on the talk page of the article. If not controversial, you can replace.
- -- Asclepias (talk) 12:56, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
- Also to the point: you don't replace the image here on Wikimedia Commons, you simply add another image here. Replacement, as such, happens on Wikipedia (assuming that is what you are talking about). - Jmabel ! talk 17:24, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
should i let the company whose product i am writing about before publication?
[edit]i downloaded their logo from their webpage. but i am not sure about the licensing situation with that image (i will find out)
if the website allows anybody to use the image, am i good?
or, if i do not see a release, must i get permission, and reveal to them that i am writing an Wikipedia article on their product?
this company is all about free and open-source software, sharing, collaborating, and giving back. i do not think they would oppose my use of their logo in a Wikipedia article about their product, but this is the first time i do something like this. i do not what to expect from them
thanks for your help NerdestBruce (talk) 12:25, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
- You should first check if there is any copyright statements in their website, they are usually in the bottom of the page or in their terms of service. They need to specifically state a
CC-BY licensefree license (e.g. CC-BY) for it to be freely uploaded to Commons. If you don’t see any, then it generally means you cannot upload it. See more explanation over at COM:L. - As you mentioned, if you believe that they will not oppose you uploading their logo, you can contact them for permission before you upload it, then follow the process explained in COM:VRT to upload it with permission. Hope this helps. Tvpuppy (talk) 14:07, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Tvpuppy why would CC-BY specifically as opposed to any other license like free software licenses be relevant here?
- Anyway @NerdestBruce if this is about https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Nitrux, I am sure one of their GitHub repositories has a logo somewhere with an acceptable license REAL 💬 ⬆ 14:57, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
- I meant it as an example. Apologies for not being clear enough. Tvpuppy (talk) 15:01, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
- It is not a matter of "oppose" or not. We can accept the logo if it is in the public domain in terms of copyright (typically this would happen because it is below the threshold of originality), or if the copyright-holder has offered a specific free license. If it is above the threshold, Commons:Uploading works_by_a_third_party#If you need to obtain a license for copyrighted work may be useful.- Jmabel ! talk 17:28, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
Alina Maz (talk) 14:01, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
I want to post a Wikipedia article about a product of the company I work for. It's a bottle of alcohol, which was the original, they took a picture of the bottle and the designers finished it. When I post the article, it tells me that it may violate copyright. What do I need to do to post this picture on the Wikipedia article?
- Hi, and welcome. Please have the management of the company you work for send or post permission as described at VRT. @Drakosh: FYI. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:37, 26 February 2025 (UTC)

- Welcome. It looks like you're logged in when you posted this question. Take a look at the welcome message and links on your talk page User talk:Salammənayşən for basics of using Commons. See Commons:Upload for uploading free licensed in-project scope media. No essays or articles here on Commons; articles are on our Wikipedia sister projects. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 17:03, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Salammənayşən: you might want to read COM:SCOPE so you better understand the nature of this site. - Jmabel ! talk 17:30, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
Wikimedia Commons does not have a gallery called Alyson Hannigan

- There are many imaginable gallery pages we do not have. What is your point here? - Jmabel ! talk 06:26, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, and welcome. You are welcome to create gallery Alyson Hannigan and categorize it into Category:Alyson Hannigan when you have more than one file from Category:Alyson Hannigan and children to highlight there, perhaps more recent than File:Alyson Hannigan, 2013-07-20 (cropped).jpg. Please don't redirect it. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 07:23, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
Extract of a painting
[edit]how do i upload an image that’s an extract of a painting? Joan8888 (talk) 05:30, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Joan8888: by "an extract" I assume you mean a crop; if you mean something else, please clarify.
- Is this about a painting where Commons already has a copy? If so, could you please link? If not, could you indicate who was the painter, what country they are from, whether they are still alive and if not when did they die? Date of the painting would also be useful for certain cases. - Jmabel ! talk 06:30, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
can i upload a picture from google about my culture
[edit]can i upload a picture from google about my culture User from S.L (talk) 14:32, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
- @User from S.L: No. Do not upload files from the Internet, unless you have a formal written permission from the copyright holder, who is usually the photographer, or some evidence that it is under a free license or in the public domain. Please read COM:L. Thanks, Yann (talk) 15:52, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
Building upon a screenshot
[edit]If I build upon a screenshot like here (Redacting my own username in this file): File:Vector2022 skin logged-in.png , do I have to add another creative commons license to indicate my changes? Justjourney (talk) 17:39, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
- Your edit is certainly too simple to copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 02:53, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
- And did I do the licenses right for this one: File:Your edit was published.png? Justjourney (talk) 17:52, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
- That's fine. This is probably so simple that {{PD-ineligible}} would be fine, too. - Jmabel ! talk 02:51, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
adding a photo for Robert L. Brokenburr's page
[edit]I noted the request for a photo for Brokenburr's page. As one of his grandsons, I have many but the best are by professional photographers. The one I was intending to upload was taken by U.N. photographer Leo Rosenthal in 1955. Rosenthal died in 1969 and I wouldn't know about any permissions for his photos. The photos I have are in our family collection. So can I upload it? TreacherW (talk) 18:05, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
- @TreacherW: I'm guessing that by "Robert L. Brokenburr's page" you mean en:Robert L. Brokenburr, but if you mean something else (e.g. a site other than the English-language Wikipedia), please clarify.
- I would presume that the image you are describing is still copyrighted and owned by Leo Rosenthal's (unidentified) heirs, in which case you cannot upload it to Commons. The only likely way it wouldn't be copyrighted is if its first publication was in the U.S. (or if it was published in the U.S. within 30 days of its first publication), and that publication was either:
- 1977 or earlier without a copyright notice
- 1978-28 February 1989 without a copyright notice and without subsequent registration within 5 years
- 1963 or earlier, with notice, but the copyright was not renewed.
- If your main purpose is just to illustrate the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki) article, they are allowed to handle certain non-free files; Commons is not. You can upload directly to en-wiki, without involving Commons. Wikipedia:Non-free content describes their policies for this, and it sounds like this should be OK. You would need to use the template en:Template:Non-free use rationale with the proper values filled out as part of the file page on en-wiki. If that's not clear, feel free to ask more here or at en:WP:Teahouse. - Jmabel ! talk 03:04, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
