“Made this last night – delicious. I used shirataki noodles for a low carb version. I used spinach leaves instead of kale and also added a sprinkle of togarashi. Thanks for another great recipe.”
—Diana
On the coldest nights here in the Midwest, only a bowl of hot steaming broth and noodles will warm me up. My family goes out for a lot of ramen, udon and pho, but we also make versions of these Asian dishes at home quite often.
This soup is adapted from an old Alison Roman for Bon Appetit recipe, adapted to be easier for the home chef (because I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to chop cumin seeds, and I don’t keep Sichuan peppercorns at home).
Even with some shortcuts, this soup doesn’t TASTE like a shortcut. The fragrant, umami-rich broth gives you the perfect balance of garlic, ginger, soy sauce, fish sauce, ground cumin (no chopping seeds!) and black pepper in each bite.
Make this soup as spicy (or not spicy) as you’d like by adding an appropriate amount of red pepper flakes. And please use what you have on hand when you’re choosing the meat, noodles and greens. I’ll talk about this more below!

]]>This Homemade Tartar Sauce is adapted from a culinary school recipe. Big restaurant flavors, in a smaller, super easy-to-make recipe. Skip the store-bought sauce and instantly upgrade any seafood dish.
Since I was a little kid, I’ve LOVED tartar sauce.
Obviously, the mayonnaise part is built into my Midwestern DNA. But add the pickles and the herbs and it just becomes such an A++ condiment. Of course, it’s perfect with fried fish, and 99% of my unabashed love for the Filet-O-Fish (guilty pleasure, please don’t judge) is simply the tartar sauce.
I also love tartar sauce as a dip for French fries, roasted potatoes, and heck, pretty much every other kind of roasted vegetable, too. It’s obviously amazing with all kinds of seafood dishes. Give it to me with grilled chicken, honestly. Tartar sauce all day, every day.
However, I find most jarred and bottled tartar sauces to be very underwhelming. They often have an “off” flavor to me that I can’t quite place. It’s probably just the fact that they’re made with all sorts of fillers and additives and frankly, just not good.
So, fellow tartar sauce lovers: let’s explore making some homemade tartar sauce, using the same recipe I was taught in culinary school (just scaled down for the home kitchen).

]]>Enjoy the beloved taste of a classic dish without so much work, with this Cabbage Roll Soup recipe. No rolling, no stuffing, just pure comfort food that comes together in one pot. And check out the controversial ingredient!
My husband grew up eating stuffed cabbage rolls, thanks to his Polish ancestry. I’ve made that dish a few times over the years. I’ve loved the flavors, but haven’t loved the time-consuming process of assembling the rolls.
Between making the filling, boiling the cabbage leaves, then wrapping, THEN baking . . . it’s a lot. In the end, each time, I felt that the effort put into the process simply wasn’t quite worth it.
So my solution has been this Cabbage Roll Soup recipe. It has those same rich, comforting flavors of traditional cabbage rolls, but it’s all made on your stovetop, in easy-to-make soup form, in under an hour.
And full disclosure: it has been a labor of pure LOVE developing this soup. I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve made it in the past few months, but I’m finally satisfied with the balance of flavors and textures, and the consistency. I hope you love it as much as I do!

]]>Coconut Fried Shrimp are a restaurant indulgence that are even BETTER at home. Juicy, perfectly cooked shrimp are coated in a crunchy golden crust of panko breadcrumbs and tropical coconut that is sweet but not too sweet.
Coconut shrimp is a popular restaurant indulgence, for good reason. When it’s good, it’s the perfect balance of savory and sweet, and the shrimp have a crispy golden brown coating while still being juicy and tender on the inside.
But the truth is that this dish is sometimes a letdown at restaurants. Either they’re overly fried, or soggy, or they just don’t make it to your table fast enough to be at their best (like, you can tell they’ve sat under a warmer for a few minutes, you know?).
Once you try this coconut shrimp recipe at home, you might never feel the need to order it out again. The perfect combination of panko breadcrumbs and shredded coconut gives you maximum crunch and the right amount of sweetness. And your dining room table being steps from your kitchen means you’ll get the freshest, crispiest shrimp possible!

When you’re making blood orange margaritas, you want a recipe you can trust. After all, blood oranges are special (they only come around for a limited time each year) and expensive. You DON’T want to waste even a single orange on a bad margarita recipe.
You’ve come to the right place, because we carefully tested and refined this recipe until the unique taste of blood orange juice was shining through and perfectly complementing the crisp bite of tequila. Oh, and we figured out it also needed a bit of lime juice to taste its best!
We tested this recipe with four different sweeteners until we found the best one, and tested every ratio of blood orange juice to lime juice to tequila to sweetener until we got the most perfectly balanced drink.
Whether you’re an experienced mixologist or just looking for a way to use the blood oranges you bought on a whim, this blood orange margarita will turn out perfectly, every single time.

This Crockpot Vegetable Beef Soup recipe has been in my Midwest family for generations. It’s the most comforting soup for anybody who is sick, just had a baby, or is just looking for a warm soothing meal to come home to on a cold day.
While for some reason my family refers to this as just “vegetable soup,” the star of this dish is actually beef short ribs. They add meaty flavor and make a luscious broth.
As my mom says about this recipe: “years of perfection!“. I hope your loved ones will love it as much as we do.

]]>This Beef Barley Soup recipe builds the deepest, richest flavor by browning the beef, deglazing with wine, and cooking everything in the same pot. Make a double batch and freeze for later!
“I just made this soup. It is delicious! Has a lot of deep flavor.”
—Anna
I hate to say it, but I’m disappointed with the top recipes on Google for beef barley soup. One of the most popular recipes calls for already-cooked beef. Like, chunks of leftover steak or pot roast. While this is a good way to use up leftover beef, it’s NOT a good way to make a flavorful soup.
The deep, rich flavor of the best beef barley soup recipes come from cooking the beef in the same pot you’ll be making the soup in, then deglazing the pan with wine and scraping off all of the crusty bits (which is actually called fond).
My favorite instructor in culinary school would see fond in our pans and say “that’s free flavor, chef!,” and get VERY upset if we even thought about wasting it.
The beef barley soup recipe I’m sharing below doesn’t waste any of the free flavor. It has big chunks of meat, umami from a dash of soy sauce, and deep, rich flavor from cooking each ingredient for the right amount of time, in the right order.

With over a million page views combined, my bacon in the oven and oven turkey bacon posts are among the most popular posts on this site. They are certainly standbys for when I need a larger portion of bacon.
But on warm days when I don’t want to heat up my house with the oven, I’ve started to turn to my air fryer. It doesn’t heat up the house at all!
I also find this handy little appliance super convenient when I want to make just a small portion of bacon. I’m not necessarily making brunch for a whole crowd with my air fryer, but if I just need a little for salads, baked potatoes or BLT sandwiches, this is the best way.
This post will walk you through how to cook turkey bacon in an air fryer so that it turns out perfectly every single time.

“Made this for dinner tonight and it was a hit! Loved how easy it was to pull together with the pre-made taco seasoning. Will definitely be making again!”

When it comes to making perfect shrimp fajitas, it’s all about cooking each ingredient perfectly. Nothing is worse than still-crunchy peppers and over-cooked shrimp, right?
An easy-to-clean-up sheet pan meal is totally possible, but you have to know what order to add the ingredients to the pan, and how long to cook each part of the recipe.
Unfortunately, as I’ve found out through lots of testing, it’s not an add everything to the pan at the same time situation.
But, by taking care to add the vegetables and shrimp to the pan in just two additions, you’re guaranteed to end up with a dinner where every single ingredient is perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection.
