Sauteed Cabbage Recipe

If your family is like mine, and you feel like you cycle through the same three vegetable side dishes (carrots/broccoli/green beans, anyone?), let me sing the praises of this sauteed cabbage recipe.

Available at any store, a head of cabbage is usually cheap as heck compared to most other vegetables. There’s not a lot of waste to it, other than a core and a few outer leaves that you might want to remove if they look sad.

Best of all, it’s super quick to slice up and get cooking in a big skillet. If you have olive oil, butter, and a lemon on hand, you’re well on your way to making a delicious side dish that goes with just about anything.

As I mentioned last week when I shared my colcannon soup, I’m trying to build up the St. Patrick’s Day recipe selection on this website a little bit more.

While I can make a whole meal out of mini shepherds pies and Baileys brownies, I wanted to share something that will be perfect for leftover corned beef you might have after St. Patrick’s Day. You can also buy some corned beef from a deli specifically to make these for the holiday itself (or anytime), though!

And, as I’ll explain below, these corned beef egg rolls are also a uniquely Detroit creation. But no matter where you hail from, I think you’ll find them fun to make and decadently delicious.

Inspired by a traditional Irish dish, Colcannon Soup is a comforting potato and cabbage soup that’s hearty enough to eat as a meal.

Since a traditional corned beef dinner is not my favorite, it can be difficult to figure out how to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with food.

That ended when I was working on a photo shoot as a food stylist, and one of the dishes I was tasked with making and styling was colcannon. This classic dish has become my favorite way to enjoy Irish flavors.

This Irish Potato Soup is basically just a thinner version of colcannon that you can eat with a spoon. Though the combination of potatoes and cabbage may seem simple, this soup delivers with a depth of flavor that’s anything but basic – rich, savory, and exactly what you want in a bowl of Irish comfort food.

When it comes to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with a meal, those of us who don’t love corned beef (except sometimes in corned beef egg rolls) don’t have a ton of options.

My colcannon soup is always tasty. And sure, we could just drown our sorrows in a beer charcuterie board and Baileys brownies, but you need something more than just cheese and brownies, right?

While my wine and cheese board can certainly make an argument for an entire meal based on cheese and alcohol, I have another idea.

This mini shepherd’s pie recipe is made in a muffin pan, producing perfectly portable, bite-sized versions of a classic St. Patrick’s Day meal.

If you’re attending a gathering this year, these would be perfect. No serving spoon needed, just grab them and enjoy!

I don’t have a ton of St. Patrick’s Day recipes around here. Truth to be told, I don’t think my family has any Irish heritage, and I’d really rather not partake when it comes to some of the traditional foods like corned beef (except corned beef egg rolls, once in awhile).

If I’m feeling in the mood, I might make mini shepherd’s pies or colcannon soup. Or even just have a nice Irish stout alongside a cheese board for beer.

So, unfortunately, if you’re looking for a treasure trove of recipes to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, this will probably never be the site for that.

BUT, I do hope that what I lack in quantity, I make up for in quality. And I can assure you, without a doubt, that these Baileys brownies are the ONLY dessert you need for St. Patrick’s Day (or any day of year, really)!

Anybody that knows my husband and I knows that we love beer. Our favorite restaurant (a short walk from our house) is really a beer bar that happens to have great food.
